“One turn opens hope.” With this tagline in 1969, the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod embarked on an ambitious national campaign, titled “Keys for Christ,” to raise funds to support the creation of safe, affordable housing for thousands of Americans. Ten years later, as a church we had raised $300,000 and leveraged that initial pool of money to build more than $60 million in housing for 10,000 families. Through God’s richest blessings, the support of thousands of individual LCMS donors had been leveraged to support housing valued at 150 times their original donation.
Over the last forty years, the LCMS has been actively engagedin acts of mercy through housing services. From “Keys for Christ” to Brooklyn Nehemiah to Nazareth Homes, the LCMS has reached tens of thousands families with affordable housing services. And, we will continue to reach thousands more in the coming years as our churches, districts, and RSOs remained committed to serving our neighbors’ needs of body and soul.
At this year’s convention, the LCMS reaffirmed its commitment to support the housing needs of the communities surrounding our congregations through the overwhelming passage of Resolution 2-04: “To Commend the LCMS National Housing Support Corporation.” You can join the efforts of LCMS congregations and their community partners today, by supporting housing ministry through a contribution to the LCMS National Housing Support Corporation. Your gift will help us leverage additional resources across the United States to serve many thousand more families and prepare neighborhoods to be reached by the Gospel. It will also help us to carry on a 40-year legacy of supporting our neighbor’s bodily needs through housing services.
In the coming weeks, we will be posting the “Keys for Christ” story in three segments – remembering the LCMS’ first national housing development program and recognizing a key piece of our own history at NHSC. It is important that we remember our past as we continue to push forward to provide access to capital and customized consulting services for underserved neighborhoods in order to transform them into thriving communities. And, we hope that you will join in these efforts with your prayers, gifts, and talents.
