Unsafe neighborhoods and broken communities… These are the mission fields that our LCMS congregations and organizations are working in every day to bring the life-saving gifts of Word and Sacrament to people in need. Sometimes, to effectively care for a person’s spiritual needs, we also need to care for his or her bodily needs as well. A little over seven years ago, Lutheran Housing Support (LHS) began operating to support Lutheran congregations and their partners in caring for the bodily needs of their local neighborhoods through community development work. Every year, LHS serves around thirty congregations and organizations in more than a dozen states – helping our churches reach out to their neighborhoods with affordable housing opportunities; resident engagement activities; community safety initiatives; and economic development programming.
The work of LHS and our partners literally touches thousands of lives a year, and that work is truly not possible without the support of more than 2,000 individual donors and dozens of foundations, corporations, and church partners. Over the last few years, #GivingTuesday has emerged as day in which we collectively celebrate, and acknowledge the need to support, the work of more than a million charities in the United States.
Today, we gratefully acknowledge the gifts of our current stakeholders who give throughout the year to support community development work that never stops. And, we encourage those who have not supported this work in the past to take today to learn a bit more about Lutheran Housing Support and become involved in an effort to lift up our communities and restore hope for disadvantaged families around our Lutheran congregations across the United States. This Advent season, we are thankful for Christ’s incredible grace to us; thankful for His mercy; thankful for your blessings of prayer and support; and thankful to serve…
“Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.” – Psalm 107: 1-3
