A growing number of congregations are supporting the mission of LCMS National Housing Support Corporation (NHSC), helping to expand housing ministry. The method of providing that support are as diverse as the congregations providing it.
Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sioux City, Iowa, has been responding to needs in their community since devastating tornadoes and flood waters destroyed homes in communities nearby. Years ago, Redeemer leveraged grants provided by NHSC to help two families in need, and congregation members responded by donating hours of labor. This past year, Redeemer allocated a gift from their Endowment Fund to support NHSC’s work.
Village Lutheran Church in Ladue, Missouri, near St. Louis, provided a mission grant to help underwrite NHSC’s efforts in the Metro St. Louis area, most especially in the North St. Louis neighborhood of College Hill and across the river in East St. Louis.
The people and pastor of Timothy Lutheran Church in St. Louis (Missouri) took a different approach, using an in-gathering from members as a means to provide financial support. During the season of Lent, the people of Timothy congregation set aside offerings in small “house banks.” An offering from the congregation’s LWML supplemented the offering.
At the beginning of this school year, the children from Trinity Lutheran School in Edwardsville, Illinois, dedicated their chapel offerings to help support the work of NHSC as we work alongside Unity Lutheran Church in the Lansdowne neighborhood in East St. Louis, helping to bring Unity’s neighborhood restoration vision to life.
All of this congregational support received was supplemented by a challenge grant. The Thrivent Foundation provided a 50% match for each dollar of support provided. Thanks to the support of these and dozens of other congregations, NHSC has met the challenge and will be receiving an additional $25,000 from Thrivent to continue its mission!
If your congregation is interested in leveraging its limited mission budget and would like to support housing ministry, please contact Rev. John Albers at email@example.com or call (314) 996-1317 to schedule a Housing Sunday.
