Campaign for College Hill

The LCMS National Housing Support Corporation (NHSC) first began working in College Hill in 2007 to assist a core group of residents surrounding St. Paul Lutheran Church on East John Street in documenting their future vision for this historic north-side community. (This effort eventaully yielded the College Hill concept plan). Over the last six years, NHSC, in partnership with a growing group of residents, has successfully implemented numerous community improvement initiatives – such as community gardens; providing recreational and enrichment opportunities to residents; providing 85 rehab grants to residents that own their homes; and facilitating crime reduction programs. These efforts have enabled us to work towards the stabilization of this long-time neglected neighborhood. Altogether, the NHSC-led coalition has attracted more than $2 million in direct and indirect investment to the College Hill community.

Access to affordable housing was one of the major identified needs in the College Hill concept plan. It has been approximately 40 years since new homes were built in this neighborhood. To address this need, NHSC launched the Nazareth Homes development – an affordable housing initiative in the College Hill community. The project broke ground on March 20, 2013 and two model homes will be completed by the end of the summer. The goal of the project is to complete an initial phase of construction of 20 homes by the end of 2015.
